Despite the adverse weather conditions, it is our intention to be open today. However, if you feel that the weather is making it unsafe to collect your child at the normal school finish time, you can collect your child earlier by going to the school office. For those who have not recieved it, a copy of the latest newsletter (8/1/10) can be downloaded from the 'newsletter' section on the 'parents' tab.
Congratulations to the four children who represented our school on Wednesday at Lawford Mead Junior School in Chelmsford. Earlier in the term, all the children in school had competed in a general knowledge quiz to select one child per year to represent our school in the first heat of the national competition.
Unfortunately, on the day, Lauren in year 4 was needed as "The Pied Piper" in the school production due to illness. Emma, from year 3 must be congratulated at joining Sophie (year 6), Isobel (year 5) and Jake (year 3) at the last minute. The team performed very well and were awarded certificates for taking part.
I must admit that some of the questions were so hard, I didn't know the answers! Well done to all of them!

The Year 5/6 Netball team had their first match for the league on 16th November 2009. The match was against 'Glebe Primary School'. The girls played extremely well, especially as it was some of the girls first ever match! I am pleased to announce Edward Francis won 12 - 0! I was a very proud coach - Well Done girls! Miss Goldstone : )
This week at EFJS is Anti-bullying week, when we will be reminding ourselves of the things to do if we, or someone we know, are being bullied. If you are worried about bullying at all, each class will have a 'question box' where you can ask your teacher a question, or give an opinion, in a discrete way.
The theme for this year's focus week is
CYBER BULLYING
This is where bullying takes place via email, messenger sites and text message.
COMPETITIONS
The school council have set up the following competitions:
* Poem - write a poem telling people about the dangers of cyber-bullying
* Poster - design a poster, again, informing your peers about cyber bullying.
Entries should be given to Josh or Liam in Year 6 by Thursday.
NON-UNIFORM DAY
We will be holding a 'purple' non-uniform day on Friday. A letter has gone home this evening explaining this event.
Any questions about anti-bullying week and the events and lessons we are holding, then please see your class teacher!
Edward Francis v Riverside School
Football report by James and Connor:
On the 10th November Edward Francis played their best game yet because by half time the score was 7 - 1 to Edward Francis!
During the second half we had to play our football uphill but we still scored another 6 goals.
The final score was 13 - 1 to Edward Francis.Goals scored
On Tuesday the 3rd November Edward Francis played a football match against Plumberow Primary School .It had kicked off and after 5 minutes we were dominating.
Then seconds later from a great corner that had been cleared out, Charlie scored a
goal from 12 yards. It was 1-0 Edward Francis. Half time went and we were winning!!
The second half began but the lead didn’t last long as Plumberow Primary School scored and it went in the back of the net! We were unlucky!!!! After that Tom ran down the line and attempted a cross, and lucky for us, one of their defenders kicked it in the back of the net wooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Two minutes later Charlie scored from about 20 yards into the bottom corner of the goal. Jack then took the ball on the volley and smashed it into the back of the net. Then Connor shot from 15 yards to make another goal in the top right hand corner.
We ended up winning 7 – 1 with three more goals having been scored by Jack, Tom and Connor.
On Wednesday 4th November they played Northlands Primary School, Pitsea as part of the FA Jim Smith Cup league and won 7 - 0
On Thursday 5th November the boys played Downhall Primary School and won 4 - 1. This means they have won their group and will now proceed to the next round of the FA Jim Smith Cup League and will be playing Stanford-le-Hope School at home on Tuesday 24th November. The kick-off will be at 3.30 and all are welcome to watch and support.
Sixteen children from year 3 to year 6 took part in an extension activity this afternoon with Mrs Granby. They worked in groups to solve two problems. One was about a man who had been kidnapped and was being held in a house they had to identify from clues and the other problem was a secret code sent by an agent that they had to decipher. The older children led the groups and all the children contributed well and didn't give up although the code was very difficult to break. The children's comments were very positive at the end of the afternoon:
"I thought this was pretty hard but great! I would love to do it again because it was a different skill from what we usually learn."
"I really enjoyed the workshop today. It was fun. I enjoyed working as a group. It was very mind-twisting!"
"I enjoyed today. My favourite activity was the Shapes Puzzle at the end because it was challenging."
The sun came out for most of the afternoon while both children and parents enjoyed walking the 26 laps of the school field to raise funds for the Save the Children Charity.
A large amount of children dressed up to the theme of "Around the World" - photographs to follow shortly.
Children should now collect their sponsor money and return it to the school before half term so that medals can be ordered and so that School Council can make the decision of what to buy for the charity. Hopefully there will be enough for a classroom and some extras!
Well done everyone!
